This was a very important moment.  She laid in the new box!                                           Her egg is the one furthest.  The closer one is the wooden egg, it suggests a place to lay.                                                                                                                         People say allot of things about raising chickens, some true some false, some just plain ridiculous. You really cant trust everything you hear about the bird, and might as well find out for yourself.  As long as you are always kind, be experimental, have fun.     I like trying to bend the rules.  They say you cant have 2 roosters.  We have three, they are friends.  They say its hard to introduce young birds to old birds,  might not want to do it.  We have 3 soon 4 generations of chickens cuddling roosting eating and scratching together.    Most recently I tried a new experiment, building a new coop and getting the birds to live and lay in it.  I thought it would take weeks just to get them to sleep in the new coop but after a few days of chasing the chickens around with a broom or retreating waiting a half hour and moving half sleeping chickens from one coop to the next they figured it out.  But they were still going back next door to the old coop to lay during the day.  I’m not ready to get rid of the old coop cause we have some younger ones in it waiting to be sold to strangers and gifted to friends.  But I need these chickens to get used to it so when the time comes to sell the old coop they know where home is.  What do I do.  I had to remodel the inside of the new coop to be identical to the old one just a bigger version.  Instead of 5 laying boxes there are now 12, several more feet of roosting bar, and a hole lot more room for humans to do some cleaning up after the birds.  Our beautiful Araucana named Rose started laying in the new box on the first morning.  This was such a great morning.  Building the egg laying boxes is by far the most detailed work of building a simple chicken coop.  Rose made us all very happy that morning  and the other birds began  to follow in her example.  This chicken thing is nothing but fun and love with great return on both ends.  I think thats what life is all about.
